Books

The Vision for New Rochdale Press is, first and foremost, to make a
contribution to the field of Co-operative Studies. These books bring
together the voice, insights an experience of academics, researchers
and practitioners, many of them deeply involved in co-operatives and
with interests in various aspects of co-operative activity. These
publications are an effort to relate theory to practice, to suggest
issues and events that need further discussion, to encourage
examination of Co-operative Studies’ themes within educational
institutions, to inform public policy decisions and to provide
information and resources useful to anyone interested in knowing more
about co-ops and what makes them tick. The topics covered by New
Rochdale Press books reflect historical, theoretical and practical
aspects in the life of co-operatives and the local, national and
international movement overall.

The Anthill

Since 2000, BCICS has produced the newsletter Anthill. The newsletter is a vehicle for promoting and disseminating the work of the Institute and for staying in touch with an ever-expanding network of contacts locally, nationally, and around the world. Stories are submitted by staff, researchers, students, and Institute research associates. Many of the articles represent the first printing of pioneering research in Co-operative Studies. In addition to its print distribution, all issues of the Anthill are available online.

Occasional Papers

BCICS is delighted to publish a new series of Occasional Papers through New Rochdale Press. These scholarly papers, written by students, faculty, and individual reseachers provide a forum for promoting the field of Cooperative Studies. The reflect the diversity of sectors and uses for which the co-op model has been adapted and the rich array of topics and interests that may be pursued within the field of Co-operative Studies.

About New Rochdale Press

BCICS has created its own press, called The New Rochdale Press. Its title was chosen, of course, as a form of tribute to the way in which the Rochdale Pioneers, generally people of very limited formal education, understood the importance of communicating through the modern media of their times. For them, that meant working with others to publish journals, most particularly The Co-operative News, a gold mine for anyone interested in the early history of the co-operative movement in the United Kingdom and elsewhere as well. It meant encouraging the publication of books, most notably on local societies, many of them written by George Holyoake. It meant helping to unleash what became the Women’s Guilds, many of which were engaged in research and publications; in fact, they undertook some of the very best research of the times into the nature of women’s lives in industrial Britain. Devoting two per cent of their gross income to “education” meant that they made an abiding contribution to the storehouse of the movement through the development of libraries and the publication of information, as well as training materials.
